JUNIOR LEAGUE OF TULSA CHALLENGES TULSANS TO POVERTY AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

TULSA, OK, October 3, 2016 – On Monday, October 10 through Friday, October 14, the Junior League of Tulsa (JLT) will lead The Little Black Dress Initiative (LBDI) – a poverty awareness campaign. The Greater Tulsa and surrounding areas are encouraged to participate by wearing the same little black dress (for men, the same black slacks and, if possible, jacket) for five consecutive days to illustrate the effects poverty can have on women including access to resources, opportunities, and confidence.

In addition, participants are asked to donate and/or collect items for an accessory drive to be donated to Dress for Success. Dress for Success Tulsa, a not-for-profit organization celebrating their 15th anniversary this year, is dedicated to empowering women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire, and the development tools to help women thrive in work and in life. Items for this drive are: women’s shoes, unopened cosmetics, jewelry, and handbags. Participants will receive a button to wear throughout the week and will be given printed information about the event for those who would like more information about JLT’s efforts.

Donations can be taken to either Junior League of Tulsa’s Headquarters (located at 3633 S Yale Ave) or The Little Black Dress Boutique on Brookside (located at 3524 S Peoria Ave) during the week of the event.

Participants are asked to “like” or “follow” any or all of the initiative’s partners – Junior League of Tulsa, Dress for Success Tulsa, and The Little Black Dress Boutique – on their social media outlets. Each day, a well-known Tulsa landmark will be posted for participants to visit and take an LBDI selfie. Daily prizes will be given to those participants who post a selfie using the given hashtags and tagging the partners. On Friday, October 14, Little Black Dress Boutique will offer a 10% discount on participants’ purchases (must show button to receive discount), as a thank you for participating in the program.
